Applying for Study Abroad

Applying for study abroad

Whether you’re applying to graduate, undergraduate or summer study abroad programs, the University of Hawaii at Manoa has a special place in its heart for applicants who are passionate about leaving the familiar behind. The university’s most popular program is its semester-long summer session offered in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The program attracts students from all over the world and offers an intensive English immersion experience with an emphasis on Hawaiian culture and language.

Hawaii also offers two additional semester-long options: one located in Hilo on Hawai’i Island (the Big Island), which focuses on tropical biology; and another located in Kailua-Kona that explores Polynesian culture through music, dance and language classes taught by Native Hawaiians. There’s also a fall term option available if you don’t want to take time off during your regular school year—this option allows you to apply for spring admission instead!

Step 1: Attend an Orientation and Application Workshop (General Information)

You may have heard the term “study abroad” and wondered what it means. Study abroad, also known as international education or study away, is when a student takes part in an academic program outside of their home country. These programs can be short-term (lasting for one semester) or ongoing (lasting for multiple semesters). The application process for studying abroad can be quite complicated, but don’t worry—we’ll walk you through each step!

The first thing you need to do if you’re interested in study abroad is attend an orientation workshop. There are two types of workshops: departmental workshops and general information workshops. Departmental workshops are designed specifically for students from one school/college at UHM; general information sessions are open to all students regardless of major or college affiliation. Both types will give more information on the application process and discuss how GRM 499 vs 699 works as well as talk about what benefits come with studying away from home and how much it costs!

Step 2: Review all documents needed before you start the application process

You will need the following documents before you start your application:

  • Completed Declaration of Finances form
  • Official transcripts or a transcript request form from all colleges or universities attended (Note: If your degree is not yet posted, please provide verification from your institution stating that it has been conferred.)

If you do not have these documents, please contact us at [email protected] for more information about how to obtain them. Please allow sufficient time for receipt prior to submitting your application materials.

Step 3: Complete your online application through Traveler Assistant. Be sure to read the steps and instructions on this page carefully as you go through the online process. It will take between 1-2 hours, depends on your type of application, so be prepared to work on it for that length of time. Save your progress and return later if necessary. Once you have submitted your application, you cannot make changes without contacting our office directly. You can always check with us if in doubt about anything! You may apply for multiple programs but only submit ONE deposit fee (only one will be refunded if you are not able to attend).
