McMaster Health Science Prerequisites
The Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University houses fourteen distinct programs, including the Bachelor of Health Science Program. This program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to health and includes all departments, from the clinical departments of medicine to Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Several students have gone on to graduate from this program, which is considered to be one of the most competitive undergraduate programs in Canada. Listed below are the prerequisite courses for the Bachelor of Health Science program at McMaster.
Inquiry I: Introduction
An inquiry-based learning philosophy is at the core of health science courses at McMaster University. Students develop lifelong learning skills and become more aware of their own personal health. The 7 Ps of inquiry are stressed during inquiry I. These include personal awareness, problem identification, problem-solving, peer collaboration, personal evaluation, and community-based learning. Students are encouraged to discuss and critique their own learning and the findings of others.
This course teaches students how to use research methods and the concepts of evidence-based practice to improve health and well-being. Students develop research questions and apply them to real-world situations. Students engage in active research using databases, journal articles, and other health-related materials. A synthesis of the course’s concepts will provide a foundation for students to choose a career path and further develop their skills. Inquiry I: Introduction to health science
The Praxis Pathways for McMaster Health Science program replaces the previous course, Collaboration and Peer Tutoring. This course is intended to foster critical thinking, collaborative work, and inquiry skills. It also introduces students to the importance of information literacy and research skills. Students are encouraged to use a variety of learning methods, including online learning tools. The course includes a safety quiz, so students should prepare accordingly.
The program focuses on interdisciplinary inquiry-based thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. In addition, McMaster’s Art and Science program blends art and science. The Integrated Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences program is relatively new and offers a foundation in engineering and the health sciences. It takes five years to complete the program. Students can expect to study with a faculty of approximately 20 people.
Inquiry II: Biochemistry
The prerequisite for Inquiry II is Inquiry I. This course introduces students to the 7 “P’s” of inquiry. Students learn how to apply scientific inquiry to specific areas of health science. Inquiry I emphasizes personal awareness, problem identification and problem-solving, peer collaboration, personal evaluation, professional communication and community. Inquiry I is an introduction to self-directed learning, a critical skill for a future health care professional.
Inquiry II: This course is required for the third year of the program. Students must complete Inquiry I and Biochemistry before they can continue to Biochemistry. Students must complete Inquiry II before enrolling in Inquiry III. These prerequisites prepare students to take a variety of biomedical research methods, including clinical medicine. Students must complete two years of undergraduate courses.
Inquiry III: Physiology
If you’ve completed all of the required courses in biology and chemistry, you’ll be well-prepared for the McMaster Health Sciences Supplementary Application. The questions on the supplementary application are designed to test your creativity and allow you to highlight your unique qualities. Each year, McMaster releases different questions, so you should expect the questions to vary from year to year. To ensure your application is accepted, you should spend time personalizing your answers and explaining how the data you’ve collected is related to your answers. The essays you write must show you’ve applied to McMaster and how your answers explain and interpret data.
Inquiry-based learning is also the key to the McMaster Health Sciences program. The approach encourages students to question everything they learn and to explore new ideas. During their studies, students learn to be independent and work well as a team. Students are encouraged to participate in research and apply what they have learned. McMaster’s faculty is one of the most selective undergraduate programs in Canada, with average GPAs between 90 percent and 100%.
Inquiry IV: Pharmacology
Taking Inquiry IV: Pharmacology as a prerequisite to study Health Sciences at McMaster University is a great way to learn the basics of the field of medicine. This course will allow students to develop their critical thinking skills and explore various perspectives in the field. The program also emphasizes collaborative learning and inquiry-based learning, which is beneficial for students in the program. Students will likely find their courses to be small, with a high level of interaction among peers.
Inquiry courses provide students with the skills and knowledge to become lifelong learners. The course covers principles of scientific inquiry and focuses on specific topics within health science. Depending on the course chosen, students are expected to complete a thesis. Inquiry courses are required in all four years of the BHSc program. Students will be required to take Inquiry in their first and final year.
