Edinburgh University Graduate Application Process

Edinburgh University accepts a variety of international students. There is a small fee for this application, but the university does accept applications from international students.

Several steps are involved in the application process:

  • Application fee payment
  • Student visa application and documentation submission (if applicable)
  • Document submission (if applicable)

Requirements for entry to the university

The University of Edinburgh has a cap on the number of students it can accept from outside of Scotland. In order to be considered for acceptance, you must meet minimum requirements for entry. These include:

  • A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above
  • A minimum of two A levels at grade C or above
  • A minimum of three A levels at grade C or above

A-level examinable subjects

In order to be eligible for undergraduate entry, you must have completed two A-level exams (or equivalent) in your chosen subject. The majority of programmes require at least three A-levels (or equivalent) to be taken in the same subject areas, but some allow students to mix and match their qualifications.

For example:

  • If you are applying with Biology/Chemistry/Mathematics, then all three subjects must be taken at GCSE level or higher. If they are not, it will mean retaking them before starting your degree course.
  • If you have taken French and Spanish as separate A levels (as opposed to French Baccalaureate), then this means that one of your subjects must be in a language other than English or Welsh; otherwise it will not count towards your English language requirements for university entrance

Baccalaureate acceptable subjects

  • The Baccalaureate is a prestigious international school leaving qualification, developed and awarded by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
  • It is an academic qualification focusing on a broad range of subjects.
  • It’s taught in many countries around the world and accepted by over 3,000 universities worldwide as proof of your academic ability.

Diploma acceptable subjects

When applying, you will need to meet the minimum entry requirement of a Diploma. You can also apply with a degree, but you will not be eligible for the scholarship. If your degree is not in English, we will require you to provide evidence of English proficiency at the higher level required by The University of Edinburgh (currently IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 90).

University Entry Requirements

If you are applying from outside of the UK and Ireland and have not studied here before, then you must have:

International Baccalaureate acceptable subjects

As a prospective student, you should be aware that some subjects can only be taken at certain international IB schools. For example, students who attended an IB school that did not offer a language course must take the Higher Level French A2 exam instead of Standard Level English Language A2. If your school offered both Standard and Higher Level courses in languages other than English, you’ll need to take one of these exams as well.
