Andhra University was established in 1926, is a public state university located in the city of Visakhapatnam, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the oldest universities in India and also one of the first three universities to be established by an act of Parliament namely the Andhra University Act (1926) along with Bombay University and Calcutta University.

The university was ranked 45th among Indian Universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018 and 55th by Outlook India ranking for 2019.

It was established in 1981 with the objective of developing human resources in science and technology through integrated teaching and research activities. The idea behind setting up an independent entity was to give more freedom to faculty members to pursue their own areas of interest while making use of the facilities available with other departments/institutes within the Andhra University campus. With this background, it was decided to set up an autonomous department named ‘The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) for carrying out advanced courses exclusively in pure sciences taught at the post-graduate level as well as conducting advanced research activities in various disciplines of pure sciences including Mathematics and Computer Sciences, etc.,
